Well Pump Installation and Repair

Well pumps are typically found in rural areas where homes are too far to be included in the public water system. The basic well pump system is compromised of the pumping unit which is powered by an electric motor, and the storage tank. Using the powers of pressure and suction and vacuum, water is moved out of the well to a pressurized storage tank. It is then sent into the plumbing system as needed.

There are two different types of well pumps designed for different well situations. A shallow well will commonly use a jet pump. This type uses suction to draw water out of the well, through an impeller, and then the jet pushes the water into the tank, forming a vacuum that in turn pulls in more water. Jet pumps need to be primed, because the vacuum force needed to move the water is created by water. In deep wells, the water is deeper in the ground and therefore more difficult to access. Submersible pumps are typically used in these situations. These pumps push rather than pull the water up and into the tank. A knowledgeable plumber will be able to answer all of your questions and help to understand which type of pump is needed to access an underground water supply.

If you experience water pressure issues or a lack of water at all, various issues may be to blame. If the problem is not in the well or drain field, it may be simple or major. Some causes may be, but not limited to, the pipe losing its prime, a clogged valve, a broken circuit, sand that has worked its way into the impellers, and a stuck or faulty pressure control switch. If you are experiencing water pressure issues it is always best to let a trained professional assess the situation quickly to avoid any problems with your well pump in the future.
