Sump Pump Installation and Replacement

The job of a sump pump is to pump water out from under the foundation of your home and deposit it away from the house. When the groundwater level rises from rain or melting snow, it enters the sump pit. When the water in the pit reaches the maximum level, the pump is activated and pushes the water through pipes, depositing the water to an outside area at ground level. Having a working sump pump is extremely important; if your sump pump fails to work properly it can easily cost you thousands of dollars in water damage repair. Basement flooding resulting from a faulty sump pump can damage your basements foundation, ruin carpets, furniture, and other important belongings. Water damage caused by flooding can also cause wood rot and mold growth, which can result in health problems.

There are two different types of sump pumps:

  • Submersible Sump Pumps
  • Pedestal Sump Pumps

Submersible pumps have a waterproof motor and both the pump and the motor are housed inside the sump. Pedestal pumps have a motor that sits above the sump hole and has a motor that is not waterproof. Sump pumps can be electric or water powered. The first is run by electricity, and the second runs off of the water pressure from your home plumbing system. If you stand to lose precious belongings to water damage, you may want to install a secondary battery powered sump pump in case the primary one fails.
